South Carolina-born and Indiana raised rapper/producer Edgar Sarratt lll, better known by his performing
name Midwxst, recently released his second project of 2021, “BACK IN ACTION.” It is a follow-up to March’s release “SUMMER03” and last year’s EP “Secrets.” At twenty minutes in length, “BACK IN ACTION” boasts the longest runtime of a Midwxst project to date. Short and frequent projects are a common trend within the indie rap scene of Soundcloud where Midwxst got his start alongside artists such as blackwinterwells and glaive.

Midwxst’s sound on this EP can be best described as an amalgamation of emo-rap vocals akin to Ian Dior and Juice WRLD, the avant-garde production of frequent Playboi Carti collaborator Pierre Bourne, and his
personal style. These influences don’t detract from Midwxst’s hyperpop roots, and the style of 100 gecs type production is evident beneath a sleeker surface. His unrelenting stream-of-consciousness rapping, signature cadence, and vocal confidence remain recognizable as well.

The first track “Let It Rip” begins with synths indicative of a video game soundtrack. The spirited rapping that follows includes a variety of references from guns and designer clothes to Ash Ketchum and Beyblades. Like many hyperpop tracks, as the novelty of the production begins to wane, the next track picks up with newfound energy.

The seamless transition to “All Talk” puts Midwxst’s knack for production on display. While the chorus is lyrically simplistic, it stays fresh upon successive listens. “Tic Tac Toe” improves upon the previous tracks with a noisy production style reminiscent of Midwxst’s other work. Short 808s and basic high hats converge in textbook Soundcloud style.

Star continues this trend but with harsher delivery of vocals and a beat that sounds like a bonus track from Carti’s 2018 hit album “Die Lit.”

Midwxst has mastered the art of uninterrupted high energy rapping. However, his talent shines the brightest when he exhibits some patience. “Slide” (feat. Slump6s & ericdoa) is a perfect example of this. Allowing other artists to hop these emphatic beats allows for stronger variation in sound, counteracting
the claustrophobic feel that at times hinders his sound.

What makes hyperpop appealing to listeners is the introspective and revealing nature of the songwriting. On tracks like “Made It Back”, there are motivational messages of overcoming self-doubt to reach success. The final song “LA” (feat. KA$HDAMI) acts as a poignant ending to the EP. Its understated and relaxing style reign in the vivacity of the EP.

While “BACK IN ACTION” isn’t the strongest entry in Midwxst’s discography, the intricate production and entertaining vocals show his dedication to music. My own introduction to Midwxst came in the summer of 2020 from co-workers at a landscaping company. I find myself looking forward to his next release with a renewed nostalgia for blasting Soundcloud rap on the company pickup truck’s weary speakers. I’d recommend “BACK IN ACTION” to those who appreciate divergent rappers like Trippie Redd and Lil Uzi Vert. 6/10.
